In June Oliver March visited us from Evington's Wine Merchants. He is a local distributor, following in the footsteps of his father, with a much-loved and well-curated wine shop. He gave us a tasting of great wines, mostly from western Europe, including a number of highly desirable classics. The tasting was well attended and was a great success.

Olly March of Evington's Wine Merchants

The next tasting of the Grand Union Wine Society will be presented by Olly March of Evington's Wine Merchants on Friday June 13th.

It will feature classics from the best-known wine-producing regions of western Europe (with a southern hemisphere wine for comparison). This is a carefully curated selection which includes a number of really exceptional wines.

Olly March says: "I am the 4th generation of the March family to undertake the day to day running of Evington's Wine Merchants, we have traded from the same premises on Evington Road since May 1926 and have gradually expanded and grown - particularly now into the online market. Our philosophy is very simple ... we don't stock anything we haven't sampled and if we like it, we stock it! Our range consists of 550+ wines from £8 to £555 per bottle.

The wines I have selected for the GUWS represent quality production (both in the vineyard and winery), interesting grape varieties / blends and wines at the peak of their drinking window.”

I do hope that you will be able to attend.

Please make your payment to attend in the usual way, as per the standard instructions attached. Your prompt attention is helpful to us, please pay by the end of Friday the 6th of June. We will be glad if you will consider inviting guests to the tasting.

In May we had a tasting of Uruguayan wines put together by Carla Bertellotti of Vinos Latinos. Carla was unfortunately unable to attend, at short notice committee members John Freeland and John Malpass built on Carla's work to make a joint presentation. The tasting spanned a wide range of styles from a fresh and cloudy crown capped Péttillant Naturel through to some weighty, rich and delicious sweeter wines; it was very well appreciated.
