In May we had a tasting of Uruguayan wines put together by Carla Bertellotti of Vinos Latinos. Carla was unfortunately unable to attend, at short notice committee members John Freeland and John Malpass built on Carla's work to make a joint presentation. The tasting spanned a wide range of styles from a fresh and cloudy crown capped Péttillant Naturel through to some weighty, rich and delicious sweeter wines; it was very well appreciated.

Wines of Uruguay with Carla Bertellotti

The Grand Union Wine Society invites you to join Carla Bertellotti of Vinos Latinos as she presents a curated selection of unique wines from her South American homeland of Uruguay.

Uruguay is a small and fascinating wine country with a profile of its own, thanks to the Atlantic and the Río de la Plata, maritime influence, which infuse such natural balance and freshness in the wines.

This tasting will explore the distinct regions of the country, from coastal vineyards to inland valleys, highlighting both traditional varietals like Tannat and the exciting innovations of modern Uruguayan winemaking.

Carla gave us a memorable tasting six years ago, after which I think almost the entire audience wanted to urgently make a visit to Uruguay. I am sure this will be an equally inspiring tasting.

Please make your payment to attend in the usual way, as per the standard instructions attached. Your prompt attention is helpful to us, please pay by the end of Friday the 2nd of May. We will be glad if you will consider inviting guests to the tasting.

In April we were very glad to have Nancy Gilchrist MW to present a range of wines from the Alto Adige region of northern Italy. High altitude and high sunshine levels lead to exceptional wines even from grape varieties that some consider to be of the second rank. We had a wonderful exposition of this relatively poorly-known region which has a rather limited production. It was a great evening.
