About us
The Grand Union Wine Society has been in existence since 1981, and has a current membership of approximately 140.
We meet on the second Friday of each month in Leicester. Attendance at meetings normally ranges from 80 to a maximum of 120 and is by invitation only to ensure manageable numbers for comfort and safety reasons and, of course, to match food and wine to numbers.
The meetings invariably consist of an informal tasting (usually 8 wines), followed by a light buffet supper accompanied by red and white wines chosen by members.
The Society has a high profle in the world of wine and we are therefore able to attract distinguished presenters of wine who provide a mix of enjoyment, education, and humour. The atmosphere at meetings and the interest of members is such that many presenters return to us on a regular basis.
We have welcomed world famous presenters, winemakers, and their representatives, Masters of Wine, and host regular tastings from national and local importers and stockists.
Membership
Potential members are invited to sample meetings as guests following introduction by a member of the Society; this may continue for some time. Full membership follows when numbers allow as there is usually a waiting list for full membership.
Members are contacted by a member of the Committee each month to commit to attendance at the next tasting. Unfortunately, it is not possible for members or guests to simply ’turn up on the night’ owing to space limitations and the need to arrange catering in advance.
There is an annual membership fee plus a charge for each tasting. We make a practice of combining our Annual General Meeting with a member’s tasting.
